What does it mean to be sustainable?

Updated: Apr 11, 2020

You may think you're doing the best you can to be sustainable, but there's always room for improvement!

What is Sustainability?

There are many aspects to sustainability, but we today we will dive specifically into the environment. The main goal is to optimize natural and human resources. In other words, we want to fulfill the needs of society while protecting the environment. To eat sustainably, you would eat foods that have a low impact on the environment.

Sustainability Basics

One of the most basic principles of sustainability that most people know by now is to reduce, reuse, and recycle. When shopping for food, try to reduce the amount of packaged food you purchase. You can also bring reusable bags instead of using plastic bags. Since not everything can be bought package free, make sure to check with your local recycling center to see what packaging you can recycle.

Why Should You Eat Sustainably?

One person can eat whatever they want and there would not be a huge effect on the environment, but if everyone has the mindset of eating regardless of their carbon footprint, our environment will diminish quickly. The more often people choose to eat sustainably, the better our environment will be for future generations. In addition, if you choose to purchase from local businesses, the economy in your community will grow.
